North Youth win, while Surfcoast and Geelong Rangers share the points in the Geelong Cup

North Geelong Youth team recorded its first win in the Morris Finance Cup at Bell Park Sports Club on Sunday night, when they overcame an almost equally young Lara side by a goal to nil.

Nathan Munoz was outstanding for North and scored the only goal of the game with a fine header in the first half.

He is the son of former Bell Park star Jamie Munoz and looks to have a bright future with his skill on the ball and excellent distribution.

Lindsay Falzon at Lara and Micky Svaljek at North Geelong have the responsibility of bringing on the next generation of players and this competition gives them a good opportunity to test them.

In the early game Surfcoast had Daniel Sharp sent off after only fifteen minutes when his tackle as the last man prevented a goalscoring opportunity for Rangers.

Rangers could not take advantage of the resulting free kick.

The ten men of Surfcoast took the lead through Noah Barker in the 27th minute and should have gone further ahead after the break but failed to score from the penalty spot.

Rhys Manning’s kick was well saved by Hayden van der Chys.

Jordan Slaney leveled the score with a cracking shot from 25 metres out ten minutes into the second half.

Surfcoast had more of the game from then on, creating several chances, but could not find a winner.

The results mean that North Geelong Youth joins Geelong on four points in Group A, though Geelong have a superior goal difference.

In Group B, the host club leads with six points from its two games, while Surfcoast has two from a pair of draws.

Next Friday Lara plays Surfside Waves at 6 pm followed by Geelong Rangers against Corio at 7.20 pm.
