Melbourne Victory Women 0 Perth Glory Women 1
By Roy Hay
Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory played a high quality W-League match as a curtain raiser to the A-League game at AAMI park on Saturday, with the visitor getting up by the only goal of the game.
It was scored in the 83rd minute by the Perth Glory substitute Monnique Kofoed, who came on to replace Jaymee Gibbons in 66 minutes.
Kofoed, who transferred from Victory to Glory this year, was making her first appearance after four months out with an ACL injury.
Her team-mates were delighted with her goal and though Kofoed has warm memories of her time with Victory, this was a huge relief after so long out of the game.
Victory sprang a surprise before kick-off leaving Matilda’s keeper and club captain Melissa Barbieri on the bench and starting fifteen-year-old Brianna Davey in goal.
The youngster did not let her team down showing great coolness and safe handling and excellent distribution apart from one throw which took too long to reach her own team-mate and resulted in a dangerous turn-over.
Late in the game she pulled off two one-on-on stops with diving saves in the area.
Perth came closest to opening the scoring in an even first half when Matilda striker Kate Gill hit the post with Davey beaten, but the ball rebounded into the young keeper’s arms.
Victory’s Stephanie Catley made some excellent runs and kept telling her colleagues where to put the ball but they could not link up.
Amy Jackson bombed up and down the right wing and put over some excellent crosses but the Perth defence held out.
Catley stung the fingers of Perth keeper Tine Cederkvist in time added on in the first half.
Victory had much the better of the second half, but with seven minutes left Perth worked the ball from right to left through Colette McCallum and Kate Gill and substitute Monnique Kofoed was put through to beat the unlucky Davey.
